Tailoring your Graduate experience: Helen Austin's story

May 31 2022

Helen graduated with a degree in Software and Electronic Engineering but wanted to explore different disciplines of engineering before deciding on her speciality:

" I’ve been working for Ultra as a graduate since September 2020. What attracted me to the company was the vast range of exciting new technology that exists across the different OBUs and the company’s focus on creating a safer world for us all  – which of course is captured by our purpose “to innovate for a safer tomorrow”.

When starting at Ultra, I was asked by my supervisors to put together a career roadmap, and I had multiple discussions about my interests and ambitions. This allowed them to tailor my graduate experience to suit me.

Working within different disciplines of engineering and on a wide range of projects, each one requiring a different skill set,  has been a fantastic learning process. It has helped me to explore my interests and find the areas I want to work in.

As a graduate in the early stages of my career, I’ve found it so helpful that Ultra employees, both internal and external to your team, want to aid my development. There is a social aspect to Ultra and a friendly working environment, and that’s really important."

Helen also shared with her what she's most proud of since working at Ultra:

"I have had the opportunity to work on projects from two of Ultra’s business units. One of which is Ultra Maritime, where I’ve been working in in-service support. This is where we carry out the contractual needs of existing projects that are currently in operation. I have been able to work directly with the customer to find the optimal system support solutions. I have also been working in the Precision Control System business unit, focusing on soldier systems and wearable technology, specifically the UltraNimbus. This role is allowing me to work at a different stage in the product life cycle, where I can work on the research, design and development of the system."

"In Ultra I’m working with technology and software that I have never used before. The process has involved learning the inner workings of both whilst considering how different operations may be useful in what we are intending to achieve. By the end of the process I should have a wide range of new skills that I can use in my future career."
